Natasha’s Law

Natasha’s Law, also known as the UK Food Information Amendment, mandates that food businesses need to provide ingredient lists and clear, understandable labeling on prepacked foods for direct sale foods (PPDS). This law was implemented on October 1st 2021 to safeguard allergy sufferers and instill confidence in the food they purchase. It was titled in memory of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, a teenager who tragically passed away in 2016 due to a fatal allergic reaction to a Pret a Manger baguette that failed to list sesame, an allergen, on the packaging.

Natasha’s Law provides greater safety and transparency to customers with food allergies, helping them make informed purchase decisions and avoid suffering the same fate as Natasha. This helps consumers trust businesses more and helps to foster a safer and more welcoming food environment for all.

Food businesses such as supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and any other type of business that sells prepacked food are required to follow Natasha’s law. This applies to businesses that package food on-site and sell it directly to consumers from the same location.
