BOPIS (Buy Online, Pick Up in Store) is an omnichannel retail strategy that enables customers to purchase products online through a retailer’s website or app, and then physically collect them at a store or a designated pickup location. For example, Amazon carries out BOPIS services with pickup sites and Amazon Lockers in different parts of the world. Customers can order from their site or their app, and pick it up from a nearby Amazon Locker inside a shop.
BOPIS is strongly beneficial for customers and businesses. The convenience of placing products online is highly attractive to consumers, allowing them to make purchasing decisions from the comfort of their homes. They also have the option to pick them up at stores on the same day instead of waiting for shipping or waiting for delivery. BOPIS increases in-store traffic as it requires people to physically visit stores, which tends to entice customers to look around at other products. This leads to additional in-store purchases beyond their original online order.
PIM is crucial to support and streamline the BOPIS process. As it has access to all product-related information, the centralizing system can synchronize inventory data such as product availability and location to verify that only products in stock at specific places are available for online purchase. Merging real-time data from eCommerce sites and ‘brick-and-mortar’ stores, PIM enables retailers to enhance the efficiency of the BOPIS process.
