User-Generated Content

User-generated content (UGC) refers to original, brand-centered content – such as images, videos, text, reviews, or social media posts – created and shared by customers or users, rather than the brand or company itself. It’s typically shared on platforms like social media, review sites, or eCommerce websites, and can include product reviews, customer photos, podcasts, or testimonials. For example, in 2021, TikTok user Trinidad Sandoval’s video showcasing an eye cream by Peter Thomas Roth went viral, leading to the product selling out quickly. The retailer reported that sales in less than a week were equivalent to six months’ worth. This highlights the power of user-generated content.

As UGC is authentic and acted out by consumers rather than brands, it helps build trust among potential customers, as they are more likely to believe other users’ experiences. Audience-generated content helps drive higher engagement on social media platforms, as users are more likely to interact with real-life examples than brand-created content and increase the brand’s reach. Besides its global reach and customer satisfaction, UGC can be highly beneficial for a business as it’s cost-effective. Brands request content from their customers. It’s an affordable and efficient method to grow their business while diversifying their content.

Whilst UGC is amazing on its own, when integrated with PIM and/or DAM, it can ensure a more detailed, engaging, and consistent customer experience across all channels. PIM systems manage and centralize product data, such as descriptions, specifications, and pricing. UGC can be integrated with this product information, providing businesses with a more authentic, positive experience for customers. PIM also verifies the information, ensuring that it’s correct and of high quality. DAM, on the other hand, can help manage permissions and copyrights linked to UGC. Its systems help track and manage content rights, ensuring that UGC can be used legally in marketing campaigns and product pages and that it’s in compliance with legal requirements.
