By streamlining product data management, automating publishing workflows, and eliminating manual inefficiencies, FELCO drastically reduced the time required to launch new products—cutting publishing times from one month to just 24 hours. 

Through enhanced multichannel integration, seamless data synchronization, and expanded product offering availability online, FELCO has successfully strengthened its global reach while maintaining consistency and a superior customer experience across all sales platforms.

With the use of Akeneo and Shopify, we were able, in just under 6 months, to grow our eCommerce presence from 10 countries to 170 countries and extended our capacity to sell spare parts directly through this channel.

The Challenge: Outdated Systems and Manual Processes Blocking Global Growth

Managing FELCO’s eCommerce infrastructure was increasingly difficult due to a heavily customized Magento platform that demanded costly development resources for updates and maintenance. This complexity made day-to-day operations difficult and limited the company’s ability to scale its digital presence.

Selling spare parts online was particularly inefficient, as the legacy platform lacked the flexibility of newer systems, complicating the management of these products across multiple channels.The process was time-consuming and not well-suited to the growing expectations of modern eCommerce customers.

Post-COVID shifts in consumer behavior added further pressure, as FELCO needed to quickly strengthen its global eCommerce footprint and expand into international marketplaces. However, publishing new products remained a slow, manual process, often taking up to one month per update, which delayed time-to-market and limited growth opportunities.

Without an automated, centralized solution, FELCO faced mounting challenges in maintaining accurate product data, adapting to market demands, and delivering a seamless digital experience across all sales platforms. 

Solving all of these issues became essential to not only accelerating product launches, but scaling globally.

 

The Solution: Automation, Accuracy, and the Acceleration of International Expansion

FELCO utilized Akeneo PIM and the Akeneo App for Shopify to overcome challenges tied to managing product data across multiple systems and expanding globally. 

Their goal was to move away from a rigid, high-maintenance Magento system in favor of a more flexible and scalable solution capable of supporting international growth. A central part of this transformation involved enabling online sales of spare parts, allowing customers to choose repair over replacement—an approach that reflects FELCO’s dedication to sustainability and extending product life.

By employing Akeneo, FELCO automated and simplified the product information workflow, reducing the time needed to publish new products from one month to just 24 hours. 

Using tailored import/export profiles and powerful rule-based automation, the team was able to synchronize product data—including spare parts and accessories—from their ERP and efficiently enrich it for Shopify.  They also leveraged native genAI capabilities available in Akeneo PIM to translate product descriptions into multiple languages, ensuring content was accurate and locally relevant for each market.

FELCO also decommissioned a legacy GS1 system by leveraging reference entities to manage and publish GS1-compliant product data directly within Akeneo.

They aimed to expand their international eCommerce presence sustainably, growing from 10 core markets to a truly global footprint. They not only met that goal—they exceeded it by expanding to 170 international markets in under six months. FELCO also expanded their ability to sell spare parts through their online channels and reduced operational complexity by consolidating systems. 

These improvements enabled the team to focus more on growth initiatives while ensuring consistent, high-quality product data across all sales platforms.
